We will read and discuss articles from the newspaper France-Amerique. Students should subscribe to the paper. The text book French Three Years is also used. German speaking participants watch and discuss some classic Karl May films from the 1960s starring Lex Barker as Old Shatterhand, Pierce Brice as Winnetou, and Stewart Granger as Old Surehand. The films are in German with German subtitles. This course may be profitably taken concurrently with the German Seminar and German Nova Topics courses, but in this course manuscripts of the films will not be available and the focus is on the classic films themselves and the exchange of ideas and opinions. This course presents "Nova-like" programs from the Deutsche Welle series "Project Zukunft." Various scientific topics of general interest are covered. German transcripts of the programs are available a week before they are presented. The course is appropriate for students wishing to improve their vocabulary, hearing and listening comprehension, and speaking ability as well as native speaking laymen who wish to keep up with new science and technology topics.
